Turning off the TV without a meltdown
When the show ends
- Five minutes before: “Two more minutes of the show, then the TV goes to sleep and we go build the tower.”
- When it’s time: “Show’s all done. You can push the button, or I can.” Letting them turn it off gives them a job.
- If tears come: “You really loved that. It’s hard to stop something fun. I’m right here.” Then head to the next thing together.
Why it’s worth a try
Turn it off rather than down when nobody is watching. A small lab study found background TV shortened young children’s play even when they barely looked at it. Read the Myth vs. Evidence.
