Scripts · what to say when…
Your child says “You’re always on your phone!”
When they call us out
- Take it seriously: “You’re right, I was. Thank you for telling me.”
- Show what you’re doing: “I’m texting Daddy about dinner. Done. Now I’m putting it on the shelf.”
- Make it a family rule: “At meals, everyone’s phone sleeps, mine too.”
Why it’s worth a try
In an observational study of caregivers eating with young children in fast-food restaurants, caregivers who were very absorbed in their devices often responded more harshly when children sought attention. It’s a small qualitative study, but it’s a nudge for us grown-ups too. See the restaurant script.
